Well, Alito is to be confirmed, as Democrats failed to maintain a filibuster. It amazes me that 45 Democrats can't get 41 votes to keep a filibuster open. Regardless, the judiciary was impartial prior to Alito joining. Congress is radically to the Right, so is the Presidency. Now, the Judiciary will be 5-4 right wing. That takes away the last protection of our civil liberties and livelihoods. I lost a lot of faith in this country to do what’s best. It'll push me to disregard government, emigrate, or increase my passion to join congress and fight to move our country forward, not backward. It’s really discouraging to know that this man will serve for 20 to 30 years. What a sad day for America.
Here are the votes for cloture. I don't understand how only 25 Dems can get together to oppose Alito. They know that if cloture happens, Alito gets confirmed. I have serious doubts in the Democratic Party, which has undermined my determination for action in politics. This leaves me to petition the Democratic party to the left (a theme in "Crashing the Gate," coming soon), or give up on politics because no party represents me. The book and my studies in England will help me decide.

So its a sad day for America because the country that was built off of protecting peoples opinions and ideas so that you can have your own, upheld that right and did something that you dont agree with. If you are so passionate about politics, then why would you think of emigrating because one man is going to become a supreme court justice. Maybe he is not perfect, but everything in this country is not going to be perfect, but at least it is one of the best countries there is. And what, the presidency and congress are right wing for what, the next 2 years, yea that really makes me want to leave, its so much easier to just run from your problems then fix them I guess. The next election will change everything, so go on and leave the country cause you cant handle things not going your way. Yea good job man
One man is going to the supreme court? Do you realize he makes decisions and upholds or dashes all of the hopes of every american citizen? He is not one person! He's going to be there a very long time...I lost hope too today. This country is so far behind where we started in the beginning of Bushs' presidency- it's really deterring to those of us who enjoy the politics and what America used to stand for. Well of course we are farther behind then we were at the start of George Bush's presidency, cause George Bush is in office lol. I mean I am all for what you guys say, I just think that because one man was voted onto the court doesnt end our lives. And he is going to be on for a long time but the other justices wont be. There will be new justices in the future that will change the balance again, and then the republicans will be the ones saying how life is over even though it still goes on. I am just one to think that yes these men and women belong to parties, but it should come down to the law more then personal beliefs. And isnt it obvious that anything is possible, because the Democrats just couldn't hold up a fillibuster that should have been very possible for them to do. I mean you were saying the other day how it should be easy to uphold the fillibuster, and woops it didnt happen. So dont tell me how this is such a sad day, its not perfect but grow up, as long as you are willing to do things about this when you GROW UP, then great. But this country has survived so much worse, Alito isnt going to ruin us. I mean if you lost hope over this then there is something wrong with you. Why dont you try living through something that is actually challenging, instead of trying to sound tough for seeing Alito go to the Supreme Court. And what, you only enjoy politics when things go your way? Cause you wouldnt have this site or be interested in politics unless things were going wrong, cause this gives you something to complain about, and not that thats a bad thing, but you wouldn't be into politics if it wasn't for this either. But hey I guess that will be a good thing one day if you can make it to the top and change this country.
